NGPHC Grad Papers

Judges for the best graduate paper submitted and presented at the 2025 Northern Great Plains History Conference are:

Please submit papers to all three members of the committee by August 22, 2025. Please submit what you are going to present in the time (usually 20 minutes) at the conference. That means no more than 10-12 pages of text (not counting footnotes), depending on the font. The paper submission must include contact information (institutional affiliation, email and phone number) of the student’s advisor or professor for whom the paper was written. The student must have completed the work for the submission as part of studies for a graduate degree; for masters’ students this includes the academic year leading up to the conference call-for-papers deadline (i.e. a master’s student who graduates in the December, May, or August preceding the annual conference may submit graduate work to be considered for the prize). An individual with a doctoral degree in hand by the annual conference does not qualify.

NGPHC Undergrad Papers

Judges for the best paper by an undergraduate submitted and presented at the 2025 Northern Great Plains History Conference are:

The student must have completed the work for the submission as part of studies for a undergraduate degree including the academic year leading up to the conference call-for-papers deadline (i.e. an undergraduate student who graduates in the December, May, or August preceding the annual conference may submit graduate work to be considered for the prize). Undergraduate students who completed their paper while an undergraduate but who, for unusual reasons, fall outside of the temporal requirements may petition the prize committee and/or the NGPHC Chair for inclusion.

Society for Military History Student Papers

The Society for Military History sponsors the award for the best graduate student paper in Military History at the NGPHC. For information on competing for this prize please send inquiries to George Eaton.

Papers must be submitted in electronic format by August 31, 2025 to George Eaton at smhatngphc@gmail.com

The William E. Lass Award will be awarded for the best student paper on any topic in the geographic spaces where Professor Lass, who was prolific, carried out research. This region includes Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska.

The Women’s History Interest Group (WHIG) Award is presented to the best student paper on any aspect of women’s history.
